A tiny but mighty gelataria on Island Street in Salcombe, Devon. Our vision is to bring joy and and a little slice of Italy to this fabulous little street, with big smiles, delicious handmade gelato, and some special Italian treats!
Artisan gelato’s richer taste and more luxurious texture is sometimes hard to believe when you consider it’s a healthier option to ice cream. Gelato contains half the fat and fewer calories than ice cream, and can also be made with high-quality plant-based ingredients so that everyone can enjoy it!
And because gelato is richer, creamier, and has less air than ice cream, you don’t have to eat as much to feel satisfied, …so it's definitely the athlete's choice! :-)
THE TASTE OF ITALY
Gelato is more than just the Italian name for ice-cream, it’s a joy-bringer, and in Italy it’s a way of life.
Our shop was inspired by many visits to Sardinia, where families converge at the local gelatarias (often late at night) and their kids run free, with big gelato smiles and no screens on display, where family holiday time is incredibly special.
So don’t worry about whether it’s a sunny day or a wet one, it’s always gelato time if you’re walking down Island Street!
Friday is Pizzette day!
On Thursdays & Saturdays (summer only) Melly produces a small batch of ‘Pizzette’. Made with spelt flour sourdough and San Marzano tomatoes, these closely resemble a thinner and crispier version of foccacia, which are delicious eaten as they come, or folded into an epic panini and filled with buffalo mozzarella, proscuitto, and rocket. Keep an eye on our insta account, as when they are in they go quick!
Family Takeaway Tubs
If you’re staying in Salcombe or Kingsbridge these takeaway tubs will keep your gelato nice and cold until you get back home and can put them in the freezer. They are 500ccs and can be filled with 5 scoops of one or more flavours!
